Friends of Hilton Harvest
The Local Cafe
We currently collect organic waste from The Local Cafe every Monday and turn it into compost at the garden. This project is funded by the Waste Authority through the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Account. Hilton Primary School
The garden is located on Department of Education land at the site of Hilton Primary School. Hilton Harvest and the School enjoy a wonderful and productive synergy! The school has a plot in the garden and do seasonal planting and harvesting. City of Fremantle Since the establishment of the garden the City of Fremantle has provided ongoing support. They provided $10,000 in seed funding when we were setting up the garden. The City provides continues to provide advice, funding and the administrative framework for employment of the gardens Social Inclusion Project officer. Most recently the City have made a commitment to provide $40,000 for pathways throughout the garden and for pathways that will connect the garden to the Hilton Community Centre. Every year we also receive funds to help us run the Twilight Fair. PCYC Fremantle The garden is located adjacent to the PCYC and we have a strong relationship with them. Children from the PCYC after school program attend our chook club on Thursdays and we hope to soon offer a gardening program in collaboration with them. This group would have their own garden bed and an opportunity to get their hands dirty on a weekly basis planting their own veggies, learning to make compost and hopefully harvesting something to eat. |
South Metro Public Health Unit
Thanks to SMPHU we have been able to establish a bush tucker garden, host a NAIDOC event and support the Kulunga kindy to become plot-holders. There are also a number of projects that we are currently talking about such as supporting the Healthy Living program in becoming plot-holders so that they grow the produce for their cooking activities and a Noongar six season pathways project that will showcase seasonal Aboriginal plants. Waste Authority With the support of a Waste Authority Community Grant Scheme for $12,256 we have built a complete composting system for Hilton Harvest Community Garden – Hilton Humus. We now have the capacity to make our own compost and divert waste from the garden and the wider community from landfill. The facility consists of three compost bays, two compost bins and two fridge worm farms housed in a lockable tin shelter. Hilton Humus is a huge asset for the garden enabling us to not only create compost and worm juice for the garden, but provide a demonstration and educational resource for our members and Hilton community. |
Disability Services Commission
A Disability Services Commission grant for $53,000 is providing the garden with the funding and resources to make the garden more socially inclusive. The grant, which was awarded in 2012, is enabling us to establish infrastructure such as pathways, sensory garden, signage and garden beds to increase accessibility. Through this grant we are also strengthening relationships with local stakeholders and running a number of activities (theatre, arts workshops) to encourage the participation of all Hilton residents. Fremantle Men’s Shed The Men’s Shed recently supported our accessible garden bed building workshop which was held as part of Sustainable House Day. We will be exploring further opportunities for collaboration. Hilton Primary School P&C Great supporters of the garden the Hilton Primary School P&C is always keen to lend a hand. The P&C regularly supports the gardens Twilight Fair, this year running a delicious dahl stall. Lotterywest We have received ongoing support from Lottery West for a number of small grants. The first and largest of this was $15,000 to install our automatic retic system – curucial for summer months! The most recent grant of $2,000 was for operating costs for the Twilight Fair. …And many more… · Each year we get loads of support to help us run our Twilight Fair – Freo PA Hire, The Organic Collective, East Hamilton Primary School P&C, Admiral Printing, Ianello Design and more. We also have dozens of wonderful, talented artists donate their time to perform for us. · Thanks to CODA Studio who donated their time to make our first garden plan · Thanks to the Meeting Place in Freo who helped us get started · Thanks to Josh Byrne who supported us in our recent Sustainable House Day event and continues to support us with the Twilight Fairs |
