The nursery is now open for operation! The nursery facility:
The nursery is now open for operation! The nursery facility:
- Is a community space used to grow seedlings
- will provide a workshop space so we can all learn how to grow our own seedlings from scratch, which can be hired out
- May provide a space for the development of a social enterprise
- May provide an avenue to help prepare people to enter the workforce in the nursery/horticulture industry
- will be accessible to all
We are grateful to the community who have supported this project, especially:
The details of the nursery grant proposal are provided below:
This Project Proposal is for a Plant Propagation Nursery Facility that will house a community based social enterprise. The social enterprise will be facilitated by Hilton Harvest Community Garden, engaging a broad spectrum of the community through the growth of seedlings. The nursery will provide a platform for workshops and programs aimed at sharing and developing skills in the propagation of vegetable, fruit, herb and local native plants. The grant will fund the construction of the nursery facility, including shade house and propagation structure, and storage shed. The nursery will be a 10x6m facility with a basic, open, steel post + wire mesh frame and concrete floor. There will be a small roofed section, which will be a propagation/workshop space and the remainder of the nursery will have a retractable shade cloth roof. The grow space within the nursery will be reticulated with a sprinkler system, run from a tap timer. An additional 3x3m storage shed will be built alongside the nursery facility. The project grant funds will pay for all materials to build the nursery, the reticulation system, and the labour required. A Development Application for this structure will be submitted subsequent to the awarding of funding, however, Hilton Primary School have proposed their intended support.
The nursery facility will be a major asset to Hilton Harvest Community Garden, and the wider community. It will be set up to be fully wheelchair accessible and child friendly, allowing the nursery to be utilised by all members of the community. The nursery facility will be utilised by a Community Based Social Enterprise. This Social Enterprise will be selfsupporting, sharing knowledge and skills through workshops and programs, and the revenue raised through providing affordable local seedlings will be used to maintain and improve the nursery over time. The nursery is projected to host in excess of 1500 seedlings at any one time, allowing for the annual growth and sale of over 6000 plants that has the potential to bring in a revenue of $10,000+ dollars. The facility will promote sustainability and healthy lifestyles, enabling people with the means to grow their own food from seed in an urban setting. The social enterprise will attract local community stakeholders such as Primary Schools, High Schools, Disability Groups and Retirement Homes to take part in programs run at the facility, which is designed for all ages and abilities. This facility will enable nursery ‘open days’, where the doors will be opened to the public to take part in nursery proceedings with the aim of creating a nonthreatening environment for a diverse cross section of the community from all backgrounds. These ‘open days’ will nurture people’s interest and abilities in the garden, whilst strengthening social capital, building relationships and creating social cohesion.
