Humus Hilton
- Compost Shelter Project

In September 2011, Hilton Harvest received funding from Zero Waste's Community Garden Scheme through the WA Waste Authority. The goal of the project was to provide Hilton Harvest with the capacity to make its own compost and divert waste from the garden and the wider community from landfill.
Our wonderful composting facility is now complete, consisting of the following:

  • 3 Compost Bays: located outside the locked area but shaded by the overhang of the shelter. They have been constructed using salvaged pallets and salvaged tin. Each bay is approximately 1.2m by 1.2m and will hold approximately 1.2 cubic metres of organic matter. All compost ingredients will be sourced locally.
  • 2 Large Compost Bins: located inside the lockable area. They are on a section of soil and are adjacent to the compost bays so our composting worms can travel freely between the cold compost bins and the hot compost bays.
  • 2 Fridge Worm Farms: we have constructed two fridge worm farms modelled on the Waste Wise Schools design. The degassed fridges were salvaged from our local Fridge and Washer City.
  • Shelter: The shelter has been constructed from new tin and salvaged steel.
  • Trailer: vital to our compost system, the trailer is used to collect food scraps from local fruit and vegie shops, take back to the garden and compost.
